1991年、ビルマ（ミャンマー）軍事政権の弾圧を逃れ、妻を祖国に残し日本に渡ったビルマ人青年チョウチョウソー（チョウ）。生きるためにレストランで働きながら、祖国で封じられた民主化運動を続ける日々。その後、妻ヌエヌエチョウとの再会がやっと叶い、ビルマ料理店を経営しながら、日本での2人の亡命生活が始まる。第三国でやっと実現した14年ぶりの老父との再会。しかしその父の死の報にもチョウは帰国できなかった。日本滞在はすでに20年以上になり、暮らしも安定した。しかしそこはチョウにとって将来の保障もなく、祖国に貢献する役割も担えない“異国”であり、“自分の居場所”ではない。「家族に会いたい」「祖国で暮らしたい」という願いと、“祖国の民主化運動”のためにその望郷の想いを捨てなければならないという思い。その狭間で揺れ、迷ってきたチョウは、今の祖国の「民主化」をどう捉え、その中でどう生きようとするのか。 2009年度キネマ旬報文化映画ベスト・テン第１位に輝いた『沈黙を破る』、2012年度のベスト・テンで第2位を獲得した『“私”を生きる』の土井敏邦監督が、在日ビルマ人青年を14年の歳月をかけて追い続けたドキュメンタリー映画である。 社会の中に自分の生きる道、幸せを模索するビルマ人青年のその姿は、個人と社会の接点を見失い、自己とその周囲の中に幸せを模索する私たち日本人の姿をあぶり出す。さらに愛する“国”とは“国家”なのか、“故郷”なのか、それとも“大切な人”なのか。彼らの生き方が「愛国心」の真の意味を日本人に問う。 あなたが守りたいものは何ですか？ “国”ですか？ 大切な人？ それとも夢？
