文化財保護・博物館行政に尽力し、民具研究に従事した宮本馨太郎。仏製の9.5ミリカメラ、パテーベビーで現地調査を撮影し、作品化した映像民俗学者のパイオニアでもあります。 彼の作品を、いくつかのテーマに沿って取り上げます。 第4回のテーマは『島の民俗』。島嶼部の日常生活を中心に記録した4作品を紹介します。 【作品解説】 『伊豆大島』（1930年/9分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 伊豆大島の風俗風景等を撮った作品。霊岸島（隅田川河口）から出航、大島に着いた宮本は、頭上運搬の姿に注目し、何度も撮影している。そのほか、便所や地蔵堂など村の周囲にも目をやっている。後半には、砂漠風景の広がる三原山登山の宮本一行が映っている。 『島の生活』（1931年/10分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 八丈島の人々の生活を、芸術的に描こうとした作品。女性二人が木に吊るされた八丈太鼓を打ち鳴らす、印象的なシーンから始まる。男たちは、家畜飼育やテン草採りへ、女性は頭上運搬で水を運び、臼と杵で脱穀をし、機を織る。たくましい日常が、生き生きと描かれている。直接民主制で知られる宇津木の港近辺の映像が、短いものであるが収められている。 『薩南十島（仮題）』（1934年/14分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 渋沢敬三率いる調査団が、現トカラ列島三島村から十島村を巡り撮影した作品。前年に定期船十島丸が就航したことを受け、島の文化が変容する前に実施された調査が基になっている。艀で島に上陸する様子や島伝承の踊りなど、今のトカラを知る上でも貴重な資料。 『隠岐（仮題）』（1934年/4分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） アチックの第一回隠岐調査の一部始終を撮影した作品。隠岐汽船から見える島の全景、各所が撮影され、上陸後には牛と共に生きる島人や、山の頂にある黒木御所からの眺めなどが映されている。芋を貯蔵するための横穴（イモグラ）が目を引く。
