文化財保護・博物館行政に尽力し、民具研究に従事した宮本馨太郎。仏製の9.5ミリカメラ、パテーベビーで現地調査を撮影し、作品化した映像民俗学者のパイオニアでもあります。 彼の作品を、いくつかのテーマに沿って取り上げます。 第3回のテーマは『昭和初期の東京』。関東大震災から復興する東京の姿を追った3作品を紹介します。 【作品解説】 『春のよこ顔』（1930年/4分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 日本初の信号標板が設置された当時の上野広小路交差点、地下鉄道上野駅の入り口、上野公園を散策する人々、動物園で白熊見物をする人々などが映されている。後半は、日本海海戦25周年を記念して昭和5年3月20日～5月31日まで開催された「海と空の博覧会」会場のもの。 『繁栄の浅草』（1931年/6分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 隅田公園が開園、浅草松屋が開店、旧隅田公園駅が開設された節目の昭和6年に作られた作品。映画「乗合馬車」を上映中の大勝館、オペラやレビューで有名な金龍館、浅草松屋のスポーツランドなどが映っている。 『壱銭蒸汽』（1931年/10分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 隅田川を定期運航していた小型客船の一銭蒸気。船内、船上からの眺め、船が走る姿、船着き場などを映し出す中で、複数の映像を重ね合わせたり、オーバーラップ的な手法を用いるなど、実験的な映像も含まれている。
